White Cane Safety and Awareness Day Fundraiser at Raising Canes
Each year on October 15, communities across the nation celebrate White Cane Safety and Awareness Day. This important observance recognizes the achievements of people who are blind or have low vision and honors the white cane as a powerful symbol of independence. Established nationally in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson, White Cane Safety Day highlights both the practical importance of the white cane and the respect, safety, and equal access that cane users deserve.
The League invites you to join us for a warm and meaningful fundraiser at Raising Canes in Fort Wayne. During this event, Raising Canes will generously donate 15 percent of net sales to support The League’s programs and services that empower individuals who are blind, have low vision, or live with other disabilities.
Why the White Cane Matters
The white cane is far more than a mobility tool. It is a symbol of autonomy, dignity, and full participation in community life. Modern white canes allow users to detect obstacles, curbs, steps, and changes in terrain. They extend the sense of touch and enable safe, confident travel. The bright white color also alerts drivers and pedestrians that the user has a visual impairment. This visibility reinforces safety and awareness in shared spaces.
Historically, the white cane emerged as a visibility tool in the early twentieth century. Innovators such as James Biggs, who painted his cane white to be more visible to motorists, and organizations like Lions Clubs International helped establish the white cane as a universal symbol of blindness and safe navigation.
