Independent Living – Senior Blind Services
Rehabilitation Teacher

      The Independent Living division of The League is seeking a dedicated, hard-working and self-motivated Rehabilitation Teacher to assist with independent living activities, individual advocacy, peer counseling and case coordination services for older individuals who are blind or low vision who live in North Central Indiana (Elkhart, Marshall, Kosciusko, St. Joe and LaPorte counties). The ideal candidate should  be motivated to serve our community. Prefer a qualified person with a disability.

      Essential Duties/Skills/Responsibilities/Qualifications

      • Experience working with senior and/or individuals with vision loss.
      • Conducts initial assessment to determine consumer’s individual needs, assisting consumer in developing initial, intermediate and long-range goals, tracking and monitoring progress.
      • Conducts low vision evaluations, establishing needs for daily living and adaptive aids, devises & equipment training.
      • Organizes, leads and maintains local support groups for consumers and family members managing senior vision loss.
      • Offers information and referral (I&R) services; participates in individual and systems advocacy; and provides individual peer support.
      • Represents the League at community health fairs, conducting public education, awareness and outreach activities.
      • Provides community organizations with training related to vision loss issues in older adults.
      • Maintains accurate, up to date consumer files, community activities and I&R contacts according to procedures.
      • Bachelor’s in Rehabilitation Teaching or related fields or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Prefer a qualified person with a disability and/or an individual 55 years old or older (preference as identified by state funding source).
